Treating Insomnia without Drugs

Two studies being presented as posters later this morning show that non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia can be effective.

One study (#0821) concludes that when applied in a “real world” clinical setting, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia appears to be an effective treatment approach for various types of chronic insomnia such as sleep-onset insomnia and sleep-maintenance insomnia. Treatment produced significant improvements on presenting complaints as well as other measures such as sleep efficiency, average nightly awakenings, total sleep time and average nights of sleep medication use per week.

A
small pilot study (#0874) involving 11 adults with chronic primary insomnia shows that another effective behavioral intervention may be Kriya Yoga – a type of meditation that combines different yoga techniques. Results indicate that sleep latency, total sleep time, total wake time, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency, sleep quality and depression improved in patients who practiced meditation for two months.

  2. If insomnia is wreaking havoc in your life and in spite of your consistent efforts you are unable to sleep at night, you should soon approach a doctor. After a thorough examination, your physician may prescribe sleep inducing medicines such as ambien or sonata. However these medicines should never be taken without a proper prescription from a doctor as they tend to yield side-effects which at times can be serious.

  4. Great informative post on Insomnia. Thanks for sharing it here. When I was suffered a lot because of Insomnia I came to know about the Thoughts Become Reality and their hypnotherapy treatment which cured my problem. The hypnotherapy treatment really worked well.

  7. Ditch the sleep med or simply take a shotgun to your face. Insomnia has ruined every chance I have ever had to live a normal life, hypnotics have simply made me insane. You're better off living on 3 hours of sleep a night and speaking in riddles than shitting yourself and walking through glass doors.

  8. I think that treating the insomnia without drugs is so important because the people with this problem are so special, I have never take drugs to sleep, I prefer to do exercises, listen to music or massage me!!!

  11. a good way to try this is to Find ways to relax the mind and body. Read articles like this, then do the same thing before bed, they have always done just give the same result. Hours staring at the ceiling and tossing the leaves. You actually tried prayer, meditation, audio books, relaxing music, or scents and oils? Never go to sleep if your mind and body are active. Learn to control and direct their thoughts. Try different things until you find something that works for you
